Bird In Focus

Every now and then we focus upon a special Czech bird.
Currently it is Middle Spotted Woodpecker (Dendrocopus medius). Czech: Strakapoud prostredni.
Middle Spotted Woodpecker is a locally common resident and largely sedentary breeding bird in the Czech Republic. It is most frequent in oakwoods with clearings though birds also occur in mixed broadleaved woodlands, parkland and riverine woods where oak trees are found with hornbeam and elm. Overall it is a bird of the Czech Republic's lowlands. It can be seen all year round, however in spring its typical cat-like calls help locate birds and in winter the lack of leaves on trees means birds can be observed more easily. Middle Spotted Woodpecker is unique amongst  European woodpeckers in that males and females are very similar in plumage, both having all red crowns.
