Software localization

Localizing a software product means the process of adapting all texts, graphics, dialog boxes etc. to the country-specific culture and group of users. It also means having all source files, Help files, user interfaces, input boxes and system messages to be processed, translated to the target language, at the same time maintaining the entire structure and integrating local conventions as well as standards. If carried out consistently, this process is bound to result in a final product that looks like the original and has the same functionality, but in the target language.

Localizing a software is a multi-stage process, consisting of

  • getting familiar with the program as User and finding out the basic structuring and compilation

  • creating a first culture-specific glossary, taking care to create clear-cut and easy-to-understand terms

  • adapting the software to the specific culture and group of users

  • performing the proper translation work, keeping in mind the everyday's usage of the language

  • controlling the quality in terms of functionality, accuracy and consistency of the set conventions
